Two families were displaced after fire damaged two attached homes in West York, fire officials said.

At least six people — adults and children — from both sides of the duplex are being assisted by the American Red Cross, according to West York Fire Capt. Chuck Zienkiewicz.

The two-alarm fire was reported about 11:30 a.m. in the first block of South Highland Avenue, not far from the York Expo Center's Memorial Hall, where thousands of firefighters, other first responders and members of the community were gathering for the memorial service of two York City firefighters killed last week in the line of duty.

West York firefighters were already at the Expo Center when the fire call came in, according to the captain, who said they had to leave.

"Unfortunately, we didn't have the time to mourn and grieve," Zienkiewicz said. "Fires still happen."

West York crews rushed to the scene, as did firefighters from numerous other fire stations "from Baltimore City to Harrisburg," he said.

Second-floor fire: They found heavy fire showing from a second-floor bedroom of the duplex, according to the captain.

"They were able to make a pretty fast attack on the fire and kept damage minimal to the house involved," Zienkiewicz said.

Despite the quick work of firefighters, the house still sustained heavy damage, he said, and the attached home sustained minor smoke damage.

No one was hurt, and no pets were injured or killed, Zienkiewicz said.

A state police fire marshal is investigating, according to the captain.

Zienkiewicz said nothing at this point makes him suspect the fire is suspicious but that the fire marshal will make the final determination.

He said West York crews are thankful for the help they received from the firefighters who came from elsewhere in York County as well as from out of county and out of state.
