South Western athletic director arrested for domestic incident
South Western School District's athletic director posted bail early Saturday, March 17, after he was arrested over the weekend for a domestic violence incident.
Kurt D. Brenner, 31, of Quarts Ridge Drive in Jackson Township, is charged with strangulation, simple assault and harassment, according to court documents.
Brenner's alleged victim is his wife, Candise Brenner, who at one point had her head shoved between couch cushions, blocking her mouth and nose, according to charging documents.
Incident: The incident allegedly took place Friday night, March 16, after a social gathering at Brenner's home, where alcohol was consumed.
Candise Brenner said she "saw stars" and had trouble breathing, the affidavit states, at one point yelling to her husband, "You're going to kill me."
Kurt Brenner feigned sleep upon police arrival, the affidavit states, and denied his wife's account of what occurred, according to documents.
Through "bloodshot glossy eyes," Kurt Brenner told police he was asleep the entire time, documents state.
Athletic director: Kurt Brenner is the athletic director for South Western School District, confirmed school board President Vanessa Berger.
He was hired by the school board last October at an $81,000 annual salary, according to meeting minutes.
Brenner led the athletics department at Hanover High School before his hire at South Western.
It is unclear whether Brenner's employment status has changed since the arrest.
Berger said she was unable to discuss any details, characterizing the situation as a personnel matter, and district Superintendent Jay Burkhart did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment on Monday, March 19.
Kurt Brenner was released after posting bail just before noon on March 17 under the condition of having no contact with Candise Brenner.
