Springettsbury Township officials have approved plans for a Royal Farms convenience store and a Lidl supermarket  to be built off Mount Zion Road near the York County Prison.

Township manager Ben Marchant said the board of supervisors unanimously approved plans during a Feb. 22 meeting for the two businesses to be built on the east side Mount Zion, between Concord Road and the Route 30 eastbound entrance.

Quattro Development LLC of Oak Brook, Illinois, is spearheading the project, and subdivision plans available through the York County Planning Commission website indicate that 25,532 feet will be reserved for the Lidl supermarket, while 5,166 square feet will be reserved for the Royal Farms store.

Marchant noted that the project must meet certain specifications before the township will award a building permit.

He also said the planned businesses' effect on traffic patterns was discussed prior to approval and that a number of traffic changes have been proposed. According to Marchant, customers will access the stores through entrances along Mount Zion and Concord roads and that only right turns in and right turns out will be allowed along Mount Zion Road.

In addition, Concord Road will be widened and sidewalks will be installed along the road to the intersection with Mount Zion. Marchant said the sidewalk will be a great safety enhancement for the area.

No timeline has been given for the project, he said.

Baltimore-based Royal Farms has several locations in York County.

Lidl has no operating stores in York County, but the Springettsbury Township location will be the third store planned for the area.

In 2016 the German-based discount grocery chain, which operates nearly 10,000 stores in 26 European countries, purchased a 33,000-square-foot grocery store building set to anchor a new shopping center near York College in Spring Garden Township.

Lidl purchased the former Spangler's supermarket, at 3025 Carlisle Road in Dover, for $2.7 million in 2015.
