Voni Grimes to be laid to rest this weekend

Voni Grimes will be honored with services to celebrate his life this weekend.

Grimes, a well-known community figure, veteran and advocate, died Friday, Jan. 26, at age 95.

Voni Grimes is a York City resident and activist who who believes that the wounds from the 1969 city race riots has had time to heal and change has started. Grimes sits on the Lillie Belle Allen memorial bench located at Farquhar Park. July 15, 2009. Randy Flaum photo

The community will have the opportunity to attend two viewings, 6-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, and 8-10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at Small Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church at 401 S. Queen St. in York City.

A service celebrating his life will be held at the church at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3.

Grimes will be buried in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens in York Township with full military rites given by the York County honor guard.
