Years in the making, new Memorial Hospital on track for 2019 opening
Construction of the new Memorial Hospital in West Manchester Township is on schedule, according to UPMC Pinnacle officials, who say the new facility should be accepting patients by the summer of 2019.
PinnacleHealth bought Memorial Hospital, currently located on Belmont Street in Spring Garden Township, last July, part of a deal that also included the acquisition of hospitals in Lancaster, Lititz and Carlisle.
At the time, the new owner said it was committed to completing a then-ongoing project to build a new, 220-000-square-foot replacement facility at the former Hawk Lake Golf Course on Loucks Road. Memorial Hospital bought the land in 2008.
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) — the state's largest health system — then acquired PinnacleHealth last September and signed an affiliation agreement with Hanover Healthcare Plus, the parent company of Hanover Hospital.
After all the changes, the new Memorial Hospital remains on track.
"We thought this particular location and site was definitely beneficial to our patient population and advance health care in this area," said Paul Toburen, senior vice president of facilities at UPMC Pinnacle.
"Construction is going very well, (and) we are going on schedule," he said.
Site work, such as grading and paving, has been ongoing, and Toburen said structural steel should be going up in 45 days. The new building should be completely enclosed by the end of the year, he added.
Although bone-chilling temperatures in late December and early this year affected workers, they are still on pace for an August 2019 grand opening of UPMC Pinnacle Memorial Hospital, according to Paul Kayes, the senior construction project manager.
At this point, he said, construction on the project is about 12 percent complete.
The 102-bed hospital will include an outpatient center, a full emergency department, imaging centers, four surgical suites, three cardiovascular labs and a level 2 specialty care nursery.
All rooms will be private, according to hospital officials.
Future plans: The hospital will be accompanied by a 75,000-square-foot office building just south of the medical facility.
The 120-acre property also can accommodate five other buildings in the future, Toburen said.
A feasibility study will be conducted in the coming months to identify the best use of the remaining land, he said, so long as they are "structures and businesses that would complement a health care setting."
Walking paths that were in place since the land's golf course days will remain for the benefit of the community, Toburen said, and will reopen to the public upon completion of construction.
"We want to let everybody know that we're here to serve our patients," Toburen said. "We're excited about this particular project and, obviously, (providing) the York population to something better than they currently have."
UPMC, a nonprofit health care system, will likely be exempt from paying several state and local taxes.
The health care system is working with West Manchester Township officials on a payment in lieu of taxes program, Toburen said, and the hope is to have an agreement in next several months.
