Man gets prison time for York City bar shooting
A man escaped a much longer prison sentence after he pleaded guilty to lesser charges in a 2016 shooting at a York City bar.
Ashanti Rideout, 43, whose last known address is in the 400 block of Madison Avenue, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and prohibited possession of a firearm in a shooting that happened at Pandora's Box on Dec. 10, 2016.
As a result of his plea, Rideout's initial charges of attempted first-degree murder, reckless endangerment and carrying a firearm without a license were dismissed, according to online court records. Rideout was sentenced to five to 10 years in prison.
Rideout's attorney, Chris Ferro, said had Rideout been found guilty of attempted murder, he would have been looking at 18 to 36 years in prison.
Incident: York City Police have said Rideout was at Pandora's Box, a bar at 466 E. Market St., about 1:15 a.m. Dec. 10, 2016 when he shot Eric M. Martenson in the neck.
Martenson, 24 at the time, was targeted, according to police, who said video surveillance of the encounter proves it.
Police said Rideout punched Martenson in the face while he had some sort of object in his hand.
He then pointed a pistol at Martenson and fired, hitting him in the neck, police said.
After the shooting, Rideout simply walked out of the bar. He is a convicted felon, police said, meaning he was not allowed to have a gun.
Rideout was on the lam until January 2017, when the U.S. Marshals Service took him into custody in Brooklyn, New York.
Plea: Rideout entered his guilty plea Monday, Jan. 8, and Common Pleas Judge Michael Bortner handed down the sentence.
Ferro said he thought his client's guilty plea was a fair resolution, allowing all parties to accept responsibility.
"There were a lot of defensible issues, including at a minimum — self-defense concepts," he said, declining to get into the specifics of the issues.
Rideout will get credit for time served.
The prosecutor for the case could not be reached for comment Monday.
