Hanover fire, ambulance service merger receives $500K grant
The proposed merger of Hanover and Penn Township's fire and ambulance services will be using thousands of dollars in grant money to purchase and refurbish equipment
The merger, which will unite the services under the name Hanover Area Volunteer Fire Rescue, received $500,000 in grant money from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development and the Hanover-based Warehime Foundation.
The money, announced in a news release Thursday, Dec. 14, will be used to purchase a new ambulance, refurbish a second ambulance and assist with administrative costs for the new chief, Tony Clousher, who was appointed earlier this year.
Merger: Bruce Yealy, president of Penn Township Volunteer Emergency Services, said the merger was proposed this year and will become official at the start of the new year.
“It’s been something that we’ve been working on for a long time,” he said, adding that the merger will allow better service to the area.
The Penn Township and Hanover fire departments will operate independently until the end of the year and be officially united at the start of 2018, he said.
Currently, Penn Township operates under station No. 49, and Hanover under station No. 46. Yealy said the new department will operate under station No. 79.
A commission made up of elected officials from both municipalities will start meeting in January to decide funding for the new department.
The volunteers in the department will vote on the officers for the new department, and Yealy said that new organization won't come into effect until March.
“The volunteers are currently working on getting their bylaws together," he said Thursday.
Clousher, Yealy said, was appointed fire chief for both municipalities after former Chief Jan Cromer retired earlier this year.
“There’s been a lot of time and work gone into this," Yealy said. "It’s a merger that will benefit the greater Hanover area.”
