The YMCA in Eastern York is holding weekly workshops on healthy aging in January and February.

Each workshop will be taught by a certified health ambassador and Apprise counselor through the York County Area Agency on Aging in partnership with the YMCA.

The free workshops will focus on the “10 Keys to Healthy Aging," according to a news release from the agency.

Developed by the Center for Aging and Population Health at the University of Pittsburgh and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Prevention Research Center, the program offers no-cost and low-cost preventative services, the release states.

The "keys" that help prevent disease and improve quality of life are:

  • Lowering systolic blood pressure
  • Stopping smoking
  • Participating in cancer screenings
  • Getting immunized regularly
  • Regulating blood glucose
  • Lowering LDL cholesterol
  • Being physically active
  • Maintaining healthy bones, joints and muscles
  • Maintaining social contact
  • Combating depression

The workshops will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays from Jan. 23 to Feb. 20 in the Eastern Branch YMCA at Ohana Wellness Center, 4075 E. Market St., Suite 20, in Springettsbury Township.

Participants must pre-register by calling the Eastern Branch YMCA at 717-850-9100.
