A Hellam Township man allegedly threw not only drugs but his gun out of his vehicle when trying to flee from police over the weekend, according to court documents.

State police say Saul Reyes-Vazquez was fleeing from police with Emanuel Vazquez-Escalante when Vazquez-Escalante threw marijuana and a handgun out of the car.

Vazquez-Escalante, 29, of the 400 block of Capital Drive, is charged with prohibited possession of a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of marijuana and tampering of physical evidence.

Reyes-Vazquez, 23, of the 800 block of West Poplar Street, West York, is charged with DUI, fleeing or attempting to elude officer and summary traffic offenses.

Traffic stop attempt: Police found Reyes-Vazquez driving a silver Mazda south in the left lane on Interstate 83 at 2:45 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, documents state.

The state trooper followed him for two miles before turning on his lights and sirens to pull him over, but police say Reyes-Vazquez did not stop.

While Reyes-Vazquez drove, police say Vazquez-Escalante tossed an unknown amount of marijuana out the passenger side window. The vehicle got off at Exit 24, Emigsville, and proceeded east on Church Street, where Vazquez-Escalante then threw a gun out the window, court documents allege.

Police say he threw the gun out before reaching North George Street.

When police took Reyes-Vazquez into custody, he took a breath test that indicated a positive reading for alcohol, according to charging documents.

He was taken to central booking, where police say he provided a blood sample.

While searching Reyes-Vazquez's car, police found suspected cocaine behind the driver's seat, court documents state.

The two were arraigned at central booking that morning. Vazquez-Escalante and Reyes-Vazquez were sent to York County Prison in lieu of $250,000 bail and $50,000 bail, respectively.

They do not have attorneys listed. The two have a preliminary hearing scheduled for Jan. 4 at District Judge Robert Eckenrode's office.
