A woman was displaced from her Lower Chanceford Township home after a portion of the house caught fire, according to a fire official.

Airville Volunteer Fire Co. Chief Ronnie Miller said a fire damaged the woman's house in the first block of Hunter Mill Road  about 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21.

Miller said the farmhouse had damage to the kitchen, a bathroom above the kitchen and the attic. The fire was contained to those rooms, which were part of an addition to the home.

“Basically the only thing that burned was the addition; (firefighters) saved three-quarters of the house," he said, adding that the rest of the house had smoke damage.

Fire: The chief estimated between 50 and 75 firefighters assisted in fighting the fire. The assisting departments came from Harford County, Maryland, and Lancaster County.

“We had a lot of departments," he said.

Miller said because of the way the home was built, fire went up the walls. For that reason, he said, firefighters had to quickly pull walls down. That's why so many additional firefighters were called in, he said.

“You just got to go in and start pulling walls and ceilings to get to where the fire is. It takes a lot of time and a lot of manpower," he said.

The chief estimated it took crews about two hours to bring the fire under control.

“We did a lot of ceiling pull-down, so it just took a long time," he said. Fire officials cleared the scene  about 6:30 p.m.

Miller did not have a cause or damage estimate Tuesday but said the fire does not appear to be suspicious.

Miller said a firefighter was injured during the fire, but he declined to go into specifics. He said the firefighter is doing OK.

Miller said the displaced resident being assisted by family.
