Police: York City homicide suspect was with 3 others
The teen accused of fatally shooting a York City man recently was with three other people when he allegedly fired the shot, court documents revealed.
York City Police say Yonti Lablair Ritter, 16, shot and killed Jimmy Avila-Velez Jr., 26, in the 500 block of West Newton Avenue on Nov. 10.
His court documents state he was with three other people when he killed Avila-Velez. On Wednesday, Nov. 15, the York City Police Department said in a news release that they were still investigating those who were with him that night.
Ritter, of the 300 block of Stone Avenue, is charged with homicide, prohibited possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a minor.
Shooting: Police were sent to the 500 block of West Newton Avenue about 8:40 p.m. Nov. 10, for a report of a shooting victim.
Police found Avila-Velez laying face down on the roadway.
One spent bullet casing was found just south of Avila-Velez, according to police.
An autopsy determined Avila-Velez's cause of death was a gunshot wound to the neck and torso, according to the York County Coroner's Office.
Police say Avila-Velez was walking westbound on West Newton Avenue and noticed three people behind him. A gunshot was heard, and Avila-Velez fell to the ground, court documents allege.
According to police, Ritter was standing on the south side of West Newton Avenue, and after the shooting he and the three others ran east on that street.
Footage: Surveillance footage showed Ritter and the other three together in the 500 and 600 blocks of West Princess Street just before the shooting, court documents state.
Police say the video shows the four running through a breezeway on that street out to the 500 block of West Newton Avenue, where they run into Avila-Velez before Ritter fatally shot him.
Ritter was identified by surveillance footage, according to police. The other three are not identified.
Ritter was arrested Wednesday, and he remains in York County Prison without bail. He does not have an attorney listed.
A preliminary hearing for Ritter is scheduled for Nov. 29 at Joel Toluba's office.
