Students at York College can expect increased security measures starting this week.

York Colllege spokeswoman Mary Dolheimer said security was being increased because of some incidents, including robberies, on the campus.

"There were two incidents within days of each other — likely perpetrated by the same group of suspects," she said.

On Oct. 29, a student was robbed of a phone at gunpoint, Spring Garden Township Police have said.

On Wednesday, Nov. 7,  the Department of Campus Safety sent out a letter to faculty and staff detailing the increased security measures.

Updates: Starting Wednesday, the gate near the east side of main campus, which leads to Colonial Shopping Center, will close at 8 p.m., according to the letter.

Additionally, a new gate has been installed at Northside Commons by the Virginia Avenue entrance, and that gate also will close at 8 p.m.

The gates will reopen at 6 a.m.

The main campus entrance at Pershing Avenue will close at 8 p.m. and will open at 6 a.m., according to the letter.

For campus shuttles, drivers will begin asking students to show York College ID cards when boarding from a shuttle stop after dark. Only students who show ID or guests of students who are with their host will be allowed on the shuttle, according to the Department of Campus Safety.

A new security kiosk will be installed at the intersection of West Jackson Street and Northside Commons parking lot, which will improve the visibility of the officer assigned to the location each night, the letter states.
