Two York County student groups are planning to honor veterans on Friday, Nov. 10, ahead of the Veterans Day holiday on Saturday, Nov. 11.

Dover Area High School's STAR Club, a club proctored by the U.S. Army and focused on instilling positive life skills, will host a breakfast before classes for staff members who served in the military at the high school's cafeteria Friday, Nov. 10.

Service members will be presented with plaques thanking them for their service and will be asked to share what it means to serve.

Red Lion Junior High School also will hold a morning event, this one for parents, according to assistant principal Lee Jordan.

Veterans are invited to line up near the student bus drop-off area to have students interact with service members and thank them for their service.

After the interactions, veterans will be invited to the school cafeteria, where students in the school's marching band and choir will perform for them.

Two local and state elected officials will attend the event, according to Jordan, though he declined to publicly identify the two officials.

On Friday evening, a similar event will honor veterans at Southern Middle School, where the middle school student council is hosting a Veterans Appreciation Night in the school auditorium to honor local veterans.

"The students have been working really hard the last two months to put this together," said Laura Maxwell, adviser for the student council. "We want to let them know that we acknowledge them and let them know that we support them."

Students will play video messages from fellow students and staff at the district about what Veterans Day means to them.

The videos will be followed by a performance from the school's Inspiration Chorus, and there will be a social for veterans, their family members and students.

About 21 veterans and their family members are scheduled to attend, according to Maxwell.

The service members will be given gift bags with an array of items from local businesses, all of which were donated after students solicited businesses for the products, she said.

"I live near tons of veterans, and (they) have a lot of pride of being in the military," said Maxwell, a Glen Rock resident.

She said that, along with planning a similar veterans appreciation ceremony for several years when she worked in the West York Area School District, encouraged her to hold the Veterans Appreciation Night at Southern Middle School.

"I think it's going to be a really positive thing for our students to hear their stories of bravery and sacrifice," Maxwell said.
