Gas leak evacuates W. Manchester Twp. strip mall

A gas leak caused an evacuation of a West Manchester Township strip mall Monday, according to a fire official.

West Manchester Township Fire Chief Clif Laughman said a gas leak in an abandoned ranch home in the 1900 block of Altland Avenue caused the strip mall on White Street to be evacuated as a precaution.

The gas leak was called in just before 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23.

The stores were evacuated about 10 a.m., and shoppers and employees were allowed back in about 30 minutes later, according to the chief.

Nearby homes were evacuated for about an hour and a half while crews responded to the gas leak, he said.

West York Area High School was placed on "shelter in place," meaning students could not leave the building, Laughman said.

Some students normally are allowed to leave the school for lunch, and the "shelter in place" meant they could not leave the school during that time.

The cause of the gas leak is under investigation. Crews were finishing up at the scene just before 1 p.m.
