This is not just another York-area beer fest.

People aren't coming to Yorktoberfest to get drunk, said event spokeswoman Kate Harmon, and there are not a lot of marketing gimmicks or contests.

Pure and simple, Yorktoberfest is about the beer — and wine.

More then 100 craft ales and lagers have been selected by CrocodileDog Marketing organizer Matthew Davis, who works with breweries to select their best offerings for the festival, which is Saturday, Oct. 14, at the York Expo Center.

Festivalgoers tend to hold on to their beer lists, excited to check off selections they've been waiting to try, Harmon said.

With more than 100 craft ales and lagers and 120 wines to sample this year, there are plenty of options.

Focusing on the beer is not new for CrocodileDog. The York-based marketing company, run by Davis and his uncle, Brian Dudley, holds a lot of events with the beer drinker in mind, such as Taste of Pennsylvania, in its 10th year.

Though Yorktoberfest has a reach beyond local brews, with participants coming from as far as California, the company is committed to bringing people out in the York community with its events.

What the Food Trucks, a food truck fest featuring music and beer, brought in 20,000 people this year, and the upcoming Brew Kids on the Block celebrates regional breweries less than 5 years old.

"Back when we started (Yorktoberfest), a lot of breweries in York didn’t exist back then," Harmon said. Now that more have been popping up in recent years, such as Collusion Tap Works last year, it's fun to have them be a part of the event, Harmon said.

Collusion returns to this year's festival with four beers as well as growler and bottle releases, including a session IPA, Alley 2.0, and a double IPA, Animorphus No.13, and some surprise releases to be announced.  

York's Liquid Hero Brewery is premiering Manifestation No. 3, a new one-off beer for Yorktoberfest known as the "Banana Split beer," which a brewery representative described as a dessert beer, with banana and clove notes from the Hefe yeast, lactose, cocoa nibs and strawberry.

A new brewery in town, Gift Horse Brewing Co., has been involved in CrocodileDog's events for about three years and will be opening a physical location in a month or two, Harmon said. 

More breweries are joining Yorktoberfest each year, with at least 30 participating in 2017.

Harmon said VIP tickets are sold out, and she anticipates the festival might sell out of beer tickets — 1,100 are available this year.

Organizers have to limit the beer tickets, Harmon said, because they buy a limited amount of beer from breweries for the event.

Yorktoberfest's wineries, on the other hand, bring trucks of wine from which guests can sample.

Wine and beer tickets are sold separately, and both will give entry to the festival, meaning people don't have to leave their friends if they're only drinking one or the other, Harmon said.
