A memorial service for former U.S. Rep. Bill Goodling will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, at the Codorus Church of the Brethren, 1129 Dunkard Valley Road, Dallastown.

Goodling died Sunday at age 89. He represented York County in Congress for 26 years, retiring in 2001.

He was known for his education advocacy as chair of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, and one of his major contributions as representative was The Even Start Program, which offers literacy training to parents to better equip them to serve their children's needs.

Guests are invited to gather in the church's fellowship hall after the service for a brief social, Goodling's family said in a news release.

The family asks that those wishing to make donations in honor of Goodling should contribute to the Bill and Hilda Goodling Teacher Scholarship Fund and send in care of Jenni Goodling to 1520 Niles Road, York, Pa. 17403. 

Etzweiler Funeral Home will be arranging the service.
