Bomb threat prompts Eastern York Middle School evacuation again
A bomb threat has once again prompted an evacuation at the Eastern York Middle School, according to a post on the district's website.
Students were evacuated at 12:10 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18, because a note written on the wall in a bathroom claimed a bomb was inside the building, the district said.
The students were evacuated to Eastern York High School.
Because police were investigating the middle school, students were not allowed to get their personal items from the middle school until Tuesday, Sept. 19.
Additionally, all middle school sports were canceled for Monday.
School response: The school principal Keith Shoemaker wrote in a notice on the district's website that all students were evacuated and accounted for in less than 10 minutes.
Lower Windsor Township Police and York County Sheriff's K-9 Department searched the school, and it was discovered that the threat was not credible, according to the notice.
Shoemaker said despite the school's confidence the threats are a hoax, the school is taking additional steps to ensure safety.
He wrote that students will only be allowed to use the restrooms located outside the main entrance, that students must use an "e-hallpass" so school personnel can more accurately track activity in the school's hallways.
Additionally, school personnel will increase patrols throughout the building and check restrooms regularly for graffiti, he said.
For Tuesday, Sept. 19, arrival for students will be different.
Shoemaker said all students must enter the front doors of the building, which will open at 7 a.m. It is recommended that students leave all bags, purses, or totes at home. Any item brought into the school will be searched by the York County Sheriff's Department, according to the notice.
Previous threats:This is the second threat in less than a week. On Friday, Sept. 15, a similar threat was written in the school, according to the district.
Students were evacuated and sent to the high school, where they were dismissed at the normal time.
Last school year there were four bomb threats made at the middle school in less than one week.
The threats were made on four separate days in September 2016, the district has said.
