Fire officials and members of the York County Hazardous Materials Response Team responded to an ammonia leak at a York Water Co. facility in Spring Garden Township.

York Area United Fire and Rescue Chief Dan Hoff said a York Water Co. employee noticed a small vapor cloud near where an ammonia tank was being filled by a third-party vendor shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15.

Hoff said the water company shut everything down at the Grantley Road facility and the ammonia dissipated.

"What really caused it, we're not sure at this point in time," he said. Hoff said York Water Co. will investigate the cause.

He said the haz-mat team was called to the scene because there was a release. However, he said, there is no danger to civilians or nearby residents. There were no injuries, either.

The chief said York Water Co. had the situation pretty much under control when officials arrived.

“They got it under control in relatively short order,” he said.

A message left for a York Water Co. official was not immediately returned.
