A lightning strike caused a house fire Friday in York Township, according to firefighters.

The home in the 2000 block of Rose Mill Court in York Township was struck by lightning shortly before 9:30 p.m., according to Goodwill Fire Co. York Township Fire Chief Nathan Tracey.

More than half a dozen fire companies responded, according to a Facebook post by the company.

“The family heard a crack and the house shook,” Tracey said. After an initial check, the family returned to their normal activities, but then they smelled smoke and heard crackling above their ceiling.

Tracey said it shouldn’t serve as a shock that the home was subject to such an incident.

“Given that it’s at the top of the hill, I wasn’t surprised,” he said.

The three people in the home were unharmed, according to Tracey, but have been temporarily displaced.

The Red Cross reached out for assistance, but the individuals chose to stay with family and friends, Tracey said.

He estimates the combined damage to the structure and the interior of the home at $60,000.
