The fire that destroyed a York City garage Thursday night was deemed suspicious, according to a fire official.

York City Fire Chief David Michaels said the fire at 640 Company St., which was reported about 8 p.m. Thursday, is under investigation.

“There were some witnesses that were reporting that a group of kids were making a disturbance in the neighborhood,” he said, adding that police will be talking to the witnesses.

The chief said the fire at the garage, which was detached, did not spread to the home. However, he said the firefighters encountered heavy flames when they arrived.

“The firefighters could see the smoke from a distance," he said.

The fire department had received numerous calls about the fire, according to Michaels, and a neighbor had alerted the garage's owner. The owner was trying to fight the fire with a garden hose when firefighters arrived.

He said the fire was "well-advanced" when they arrived, and it took firefighters about 20 minutes to have it under control.

Michaels said the garage is a total loss and that a car outside the garage was damaged. Two garages nearby had heat damage as well, according to the chief.

No one was injured in the blaze.
