WellSpan York Hospital is looking to educate local seniors on how to recover from a fall.

York Hospital Trauma Services and the Falls Free Coalition of York County will offer free classes throughout the year on activities and changes to minimize the occurrence of falls, according to a news release.

The program, called “A Matter of Balance,” is currently accepting registrations for classes scheduled to begin in July, the news release states.

The eight, two-hour learning sessions will teach residents the proper environmental changes to reduce the risk of falls as well as exercises to help recover from falls, manage fears of falling and strengthen balance, according to the release.

“Our trauma center is here to serve the community when people need us most,” said York Hospital Trauma Program Manager Sandra Garrett, according to the release. “We hope offering this successful program to older adults will not only keep them safer but will also empower individuals to be as active as possible.”

According to the release, falls are the No. 1 reason for trauma admissions at York Hospital’s Level 1 Regional Trauma Center. The hospital receives more than 2,200 trauma patients per year.

Upcoming sessions will take place in Manchester Township and Hanover, according to the release.

Anyone interested in taking a course may call 717-851-3082 for information.
