York High students to run Bearcat Bistro
William Penn High School’s special education students are preparing to start a new coffee shop at the school.
Students in the school’s Life Skills program will hold the grand opening of the Bearcat Bistro at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, according to a news release.
The bistro will be open from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the school year. The shop will serve York High staff food and drinks such as pastries, fruit, smoothies and coffee, according to the news release.
“I am very excited for the opportunities it will provide for the Life Skills students,” support teacher Michelle Masco said in a news release. “This café provides students with moderate to severe disabilities a chance to plan, shop, bake and sell.”
The shop’s opening was made possible in part by start-up funding from a grant awarded by the York County Alliance for Learning and a sponsorship from the Green Bean Roasting Co.
"As a city resident and business owner, giving back to the community is essential to me,” said Green Bean Roasting Co. owner Jen Schreiber in a news release. “I am thrilled to be a part of Bearcat Bistro and the wonderful work that William Penn is doing for its students."
