York Tech student's traffic safety billboard unveiled
Those headed on Interstate 83 southbound will get a chance to see a York Tech student's work.
York County School of Technology senior Luzine Maldonado Torres, 17, of West York, entered her billboard design, which reads "DON'T TEXT AND DRIVE," for this year's "No Excuses" traffic safety billboard design contest.
On Friday, Torres' design was unveiled. The billboard can be seen between the North George Street and Emigsville exits, and it will remain there for four weeks as part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
Torres was one of 44 students to enter the contest from 11 high schools in York County. The entries were reviewed by a panel of judges and then by a group of Eastern Lebanon County High School students.
Design: Torres entered her design as part of her commercial arts class at York Tech.
Torres' design, which featured blood, text messages and car damage within the text of the billboard, ended up being the winner.
"All the things in the pictures are like what could happen if you're texting and driving," Torres said.
She said her family was thrilled that her design was selected. Torres said her uncle called her and said how excited he was to see her name on the billboard. Torres said her mom also was happy for her.
"Look at her, she's so proud," she said, pointing to her mother, who was at the unveiling.
Therese Laucks, Torres' teacher, said she wasn't surprised her design was chosen.
"It's awesome," she said.
The contest: This was the first year York County students could enter the contest, according to a news release.
Last year the contest was held in Lebanon County, and its success allowed the Center for Traffic Safety to expand it to other counties.
Torres was awarded $100 for her design, and York Tech received a $1,000 mini-grant for being the school of origin.
