Woman rescued from steep hill above Susquehanna River
A young woman became stuck on a steep hill overlooking the Susquehanna River on Monday afternoon while hiking with friends at a stretch known as Long Level in Lower Windsor Township.
The hill is next to Fishing Creek Road, which itself is in Chanceford Township, according to Lower Windsor Township Police Officer Andrew Neff. He said the woman, in her 20s, was rescued not far from where Fishing Creek Road ends in a cul de sac.
Emergency crews were called there about 3:30 p.m. for a report of someone hanging off a cliff, but the young woman wasn't dangling from a cliff ledge, officials said.
Rather, she went off-trail, and by the time she realized how steep the hill was, she was unable to move forward and unable to go back, according to Craley Fire Chief Jesse Frantz.
"It really gets steep right before the river," he said.
Fire and rescue crews responded from Craley, Wrightsville and Yorkana to save the woman, the chief said.

Rappelling rescuer: Frantz said rescuers set up a rope system and attached a harness to Frantz, who rappelled down to the woman.
Frantz said he then attached a second harness rig to the woman, and rescuers hoisted her up. He said rather than having him climb back up himself, rescuers hauled him up as well.
The young woman wasn't hurt, he said.
Neff noted she wound up in the predicament after taking the road — in this case, trail — less traveled.
"She just took the wrong path," he said.
Frantz said his department doesn't get many calls about hikers needing to be saved from the hill.
"Every couple years we might get one, but it's not often," he said.
