The Haines Shoe House, a York County landmark at 197 Shoe House Road in Hellam Township, opened for the season Monday, the first day of spring.

Eccentric York County shoe salesman "Colonel" Mahlon N. Haines built the shoe-shaped house in 1948 as an advertising gimmick. It soon became an overnight getaway destination for couples.

Purchased by Springettsbury Township residents Melanie and Jeff Schmuck in 2015, the Shoe House features hand-dipped Beck's Ice Cream, a unique gift shop and guided tours of its interior.

Tour rates are $5 for adults, and children 5 and under are free. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday (closed Easter Sunday) until Memorial Day.

From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the hours will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The attraction will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday from Labor Day through Halloween.
