A West Manchester Township Police officer is accused of having about 50 images of child porn on his cellphone, according to charging documents filed Thursday.

Chad Richard Howell, 36, of Dillsburg, is charged with 50 counts of child pornography and one count of criminal use of a communication facility, according to charging documents.

Howell was placed on unpaid administrative leave pending the results of the investigation when the township learned of the charges on Thursday, according to West Manchester Township manager Kelly Kelch.

Howell was a York City Police officer until at least June 2015 and was then hired by the West Manchester Township Police Department.

Allegations:  On Feb. 3, the Attorney General's office received 14 cybertips reporting a user uploading an explicit image of a child, documents state.

The website Pinterest had reported that users uploaded images in October and November 2016, with those users registered under Chad or Chad Howell, documents state.

Through a subpoena, the IP addresses of those accounts were found to be from Howell's home in Dillsburg, the AG's office said.

Some of the uploaded images  included girls as young as 8 years old, according to court documents.

Howell: Agents from the AG's office met Thursday with Chief Arthur Smith Jr. at the police department at 380 East Berlin Road, according to charging documents.

Officials met with Smith to set up meeting with Howell as he was getting off duty, the AG's office said.

Two agents from the AG's office met with Howell and recorded the conversation, documents state.

While speaking with officials, Howell told them he had internet service at his home and used several social media sites, including Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest, according to the AG's office.

Howell brought his personal Dell laptop and personal phone with him Thursday morning and consented to have them searched, documents state.

While there, Howell confirmed that he used three of the four profiles mentioned as the ones that uploaded the pictures, according to charging documents. He admitted to using the names "howellycpd" "chrissmith4618" and "Howell103," the AG's office said.

When asked if officials would find child pornography on his phone or home computers, Howell said, "I would like to say no, but I really don't know," documents state.

While doing a preview of Howell's iPhone, about 50 images of child pornography were found, the AG's office said.

"This was only a sampling of those images on Chad Richard Howell's Apple iPhone," documents state.

Additionally, agents from the AG's office searched Howell's residence, documents state. It is not clear if anything was found at Howell's home.

Howell was arraigned on the charges Thursday at District Judge Keith Albright's office. He was remanded to York County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail on Thursday, and he posted  bail on Friday, according to online court records.

It is unclear if he has an attorney.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 3 p.m. April 24 at Albright's office.
