Neither rain nor snow nor careening vehicle will stop postal carriers from providing mail service to Shrewsbury-area customers.

An SUV crashed into a window of the Shrewsbury post office at 50 Constitution Ave. about 12:40 p.m. Wednesday.

"Thank goodness nobody was hurt," said Karen Mazurkiewicz, spokeswoman for the U.S. Postal Service in central Pennsylvania and western New York.

"An elderly female wanted to pull closer to the curb but gave it a little too much gas," Southern Regional Police Sgt. Daniel Teague said. "Her SUV jumped the curb and ran into a window."

The front of the SUV was perhaps a foot inside the building at most, he said, and he described damage as fairly minor.

The window was in a manager's office, but the manager wasn't there at the time, according to Teague. He confirmed there were postal workers in the main portion of the building, which was unaffected by the crash.

The building is structurally sound, and the post office did not close as a result, according to Mazurkiewicz.

"There is no disruption to delivery or retail services," she said. "It hit a part of the building that we're able to still be functional."

The 76-year-old driver from Freeland, Maryland, was able to drive her SUV from the scene, Teague said.

She will not be cited, he said.

It's not the first time Shrewsbury's post office building has been struck by vehicles, according to the sergeant.
