Philly man's burning body found in West Manchester Twp.
Officers called to a rural area of West Manchester Township early Thursday morning found a human body that was on fire, according to police.
It was about 4:45 a.m. that police and fire crews were dispatched to the area of Hokes Mill and Old Salem roads for a reported fire with a burn victim, according to local dispatch logs.
Responding officers extinguished the fire and determined the victim was dead, according to a news release from West Manchester Township Police.
The victim was 23-year-old Juan Acevedo DeJesus of Potter Street in Philadelphia, according to the York County Coroner's Office.
Coroner Pam Gay said the death is considered suspicious and is a possible homicide. She was summoned to the scene about 9 a.m. Thursday, several hours after police began investigating.
Gay noted that the body was just off the road in a non-wooded area, where passers-by could have easily seen it burning.
Potential homicide: All York County deaths that involve unknown or unclear circumstances are treated as homicides until evidence proves otherwise, according to the coroner.
"So right now, we are treating this as a potential homicide," Gay said.
An autopsy was scheduled for 8 a.m. Friday at Allentown's Lehigh Valley Hospital, she said.
York County spokesman Mark Walters said 911 dispatchers were alerted to the burning body after a male pedestrian, who didn't have a phone with him, caught the attention of a driver who was on her way to work.
After the pedestrian spoke with the driver, one of them used her phone to call 911, Walters said.
Assisting police and the coroner's office in the death investigation are the York County District Attorney's Office, the York County Forensics Unit and a state police fire marshal, police said.
York County District Attorney Tom Kearney was at the scene Thursday but drove past reporters without stopping to answer questions.
Kyle King, spokesman for the DA's Office, referred questions to township police.
