AVELLA, Pa. — A prosecutor says state troopers critically wounded a man who came at them with a 10-inch Bowie knife once officers responded to a domestic disturbance in western Pennsylvania.

Troopers from the Washington, Pennsylvania barracks say they were called to Jefferson Township about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday when a woman said her son was “out of control” and damaging property and fighting with family.

Washington County District Attorney Eugene Vittone says police told him that man, 20-year-old Steven Ward, charged at troopers with the knife and was shot when he refused to drop it.

Ward hasn’t been charged. He remained in critical condition at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh Wednesday afternoon.

Vittone is reviewing the shooting, which is standard. The troopers involved are on administrative leave, which is also standard.
