PSP ID's man fatally shot by police in Chambersburg Hospital
MONDAY, NOV. 7, 2016 UPDATE:
State police have released the name of the man fatally shot in Chambersburg Hospital by a police officer.
Trooper Rob Hicks, a state police spokesman, said the man was Dennis Kirk, 64, of Chambersburg.
REPORTED LAST WEEK:
Police shot and killed a patient Thursday morning inside Chambersburg Hospital in Franklin County, officials said.
Officers were called to the hospital about 8 a.m. after a male patient brandished a knife and threatened hospital staff, according to Trooper Rob Hicks, a state police spokesman.
After police arrived, the patient started threatening them, Hicks wrote in a news release.
"Officers made several attempts to subdue the patient without success," Hicks wrote. "(He) was able to continue to brandish the knife and threaten the officers during the attempts to subdue him and he was shot."
The man subsequently died, according to Hicks.
No one else was hurt, he said.
The Franklin County District Attorney's Office and the Franklin County Coroner's Office are involved in the investigation, according to Hicks.
State police released no other information Thursday, including the name of the patient who was fatally shot.
It is unclear which police department was involved in the fatal shooting.
Chambersburg Hospital issued a news release describing the encounter as "an unfortunate incident."
The initial hospital news release stated it was Chambersburg police officers who were involved in the fatal shooting, but the release was revised Thursday morning to simply say "law enforcement officers."
