Police: Detective was DUI, crashed York County-owned SUV
A York County detective crashed a county-owned SUV into a tree in Maryland, allegedly while driving drunk, police there said.
Andrew Hundertmark, 52, of Timber Lane in Penn Township, is facing charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired by alcohol, failing to obey traffic-control devices, reckless driving in wanton and willful disregard for the safety of people and property, and negligently driving a vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner that endangers people and property, according to court records.
He was issued citations and paperwork at the scene of the Oct. 15 crash, which happened about 11 p.m. in the 2200 block of Deep Run Road in Carroll County, according to Cpl. Jon Light, spokesman for the Carroll County Sheriff's Office.
Hundertmark was then released at the scene to a sober driver, Light said.
He was driving a 2013 Ford Explorer and crashed it into a tree, according to the corporal. He was alone in the SUV at the time and didn't report being injured, Light said.
Hundertmark refused to submit to a Breathalyzer alcohol test at the scene, according to Light, which in Maryland carries penalties including an automatic license suspension for Maryland drivers.
Resigned: In the wake of the crash, Hundertmark resigned his position as a York County detective, according to Kyle King, spokesman for the York County District Attorney's Office. The county detective bureau is overseen by the DA's office.
He had been a county detective for four or five years, King confirmed.
The Ford Explorer is a county-owned vehicle used by the DA's office, according to King, who said it's his understanding the SUV is totaled.
Hundertmark must appear in Maryland's district court for a "formal advisement of charges," Light said. That's akin to Pennsylvania's system of being arraigned on charges by a magisterial district judge, who then sets bail.
A phone number for Hundertmark could not be found. It's unclear if he has retained an attorney.
