A York City man escaped life-threatening injury Wednesday night when gunfire rang out on West Princess Street, police said.

Matthew Bell, 31, of West Locust Street, suffered a gunshot wound to his right elbow, according to York City Detective First Class Jeff Spence.

York City officers were called to the 800 block of West Princess Street for reported gunfire at 9:19 p.m., Spence said. But they were quickly rerouted to Bell's Locust Street home, where he'd run after being shot, the detective said.

Bell told officers he was visiting a friend in the 700 block of West Princess Street and was standing outside with his friend and two others when several gunshots rang out, according to Spence.

Bell tried to take cover, but he'd already been shot, so he ran home, Spence said.

Bell told officers he didn't see any people or vehicles in the area before being shot, the detective said.

York City Police responded to a report of shots fired in the area of 700 West Princess Street.

His condition could not be obtained from York Hospital on Thursday.
