Ayden Zeigler-Kohler went to football practice one day in August and ran laps. It was like every other practice. Until it wasn’t.

The Springettsbury Township fourth-grader fell and couldn’t get up. Doctors eventually found two brain tumors, and because one of the tumors is on his brain stem, it is inoperable. In September, he started traveling five days a week with his family to Johns Hopkins to receive six weeks of radiation treatments.

Bailee’s Homebrew and Wine Supplies owner Bob Elmiger was touched by the story, and that’s why the York businessman wants to help through a fundraiser featuring endless beer and wine tastings and a silent auction.

“We are trying to get small businesses like ourselves together,” he said. “It’s really about the whole community (coming) together and really supporting this boy and his family.”

Elmiger has hosted similar fundraisers in the past at his home brewing supply business, and a portion of each sale of Bailee's Beer Kits continues to go to the York County SPCA. About 300 people showed up last fall and raised $4,000 to support the SPCA and the Keystone Warriors. With early promotion and easier, free parking, Elmiger said he hopes to double that for Ayden.

For a $15 suggested donation, attendees get a tasting glass and samplings from Bailee’s Homebrew, local breweries, wineries and a meadery, with all proceeds going to Ayden’s family.

When you get hungry, Never Forgotten BBQ will be there selling their specialties. The restaurant was originally founded by Ayden’s father, Bill Kohler.

There also will  be a silent auction featuring signed Pittsburgh Steelers merchandise, a signed picture of golfer Ben Hogan with former president Dwight D. Eisenhower, green fees for four at local golf courses and other sports memorabilia.

“We want to show them that all these people worked together to support Ayden,” Elmiger said. “That’s the kind of business we’re trying to create as well. Not to make it about ourselves but about a whole collaboration of businesses working together.”

Bailee's Benefit for Ayden is Oct. 22 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Bailee’s Homebrew, 3605 E. Market Street in York. Additional vendor and auction information can be found here.
