A York City man is accused of holding a woman against her will with a knife and threatening to kill her in late June, according to police.

Emmanuel Theodore Banks, 31, of 621 E. Market St., is charged with kidnapping to inflict terror, burglary, terroristic threats, unlawful restraint and simple assault for an alleged incident earlier in the summer, according to charging documents.

Banks was formally arraigned Sept. 16 in front of Common Pleas Judge Michael E. Bortner, according to online court records.

Alleged incident: About 5 p.m. June 30, Banks allegedly went to a woman's home in the 700 block of Edison Street and threatened her with a knife, police said. Police say Banks threatened to kill the woman and forced her to take him inside the home.

While in the home, Banks allegedly punched her in the face and would not let her leave, according to documents.

Banks continued to restrain the woman and forced her to drive him to Red Lion to get his clothing, documents state. After that, police say he forced the woman to drive back to her home, where he allegedly continued to punch and kick the woman.

The next morning the woman convinced Banks that she needed to leave her home, according to police. The woman drove to her sister-in-law's to contact Banks' probation officer, police said.

Banks was then taken into custody by York County Probation, and the woman was taken to Memorial Hospital, documents state. "The victim had several visible bruises and lacerations to multiple parts of her body," the arresting officer wrote in charging documents.

Lt. Troy Bankert,  who supervises the department's detective division, confirmed last week that the woman was Banks' girlfriend.

Banks also was charged with simple assault and theft by unlawful taking from charges filed May 28, online court records indicate. His charge of theft by unlawful taking was dismissed, those records state.

Between the charges stemming from the alleged June 30 incident and the one from May 28, Banks remains in York County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail.
