Highs in the 90s for the opening of the York Fair
Those hoping to have some cooler weather for the York Fair this year might want to go early next week, when officials say a cold front is expected to come to the area and cool things down a little.
According to Aaron Tyberski, meteorologist for the National Weather Service, the heat should stick around until Sunday, when a cold front will come into the area, bringing the temperatures down to more-seasonable numbers.
The heat: Tyberski said the highs in York have been in the 90s since Labor Day and are expected to stay around there through Saturday. He said typically September weather has highs in the upper 70s.
"So we're running about 15 degrees above normal," he said.
Tyberski said a high-pressure system with warm air near the surface and near the upper atmosphere is causing the heat. On Wednesday, NWS recorded a high of 93 — just three degrees short of the record of 96 set for that day in 1985, Tyberski said.
Andy Mussoline, senior meteorologist for AccuWeather, agreed that the heat will stick around until Saturday. He said that for Thursday the forecast is anticipating a high of 94 degrees, short of the record of 97 recorded in 1939.
Mussoline warned of the humidity making the heat feel worse than it actually is.
"When we factor (the humidity) in, AccuWeather real feel temperatures are going to be in the low 100s (Thursday) afternoon," Mussoline said.
According to AccuWeather predictions, Mussoline said the high should be in the upper 80s until Sunday.
Tyberski said the highs being seen now is typical of July weather. Mussoline agreed.
"We'll have to treat this heat and humidity as if it were the middle of summer," Mussoline said.
Beat the heat: Both meteorologists said the cold front coming should lower the highs for the days following Saturday.
Tyberski said the cold front will push the highs down to the mid- to upper 70s.
"That extends probably through mid next week," he said.
Mussoline projected similar outcomes, with AccuWeather predictions showing highs in the low 80s.
“Just a few days of this heat and humidity here before we get some relief on Sunday,” he said.
Both said the cooler weather will stay into next week.
