A gas line was struck in Jackson Township Tuesday afternoon.

Nashville Volunteer Fire Co. Chief Brad Dunham said the department responded to the site just north of DJ Smith Industrial Inc. in the 200 block of Nashville Boulevard.

Columbia Gas spokesman Russell Bedell said a third-party contractor struck the gas line.

"We shut off the gas and the situation was made safe," he said.

The line was struck at about 3:45 p.m., according to York County 911's web log.

The chief said they evacuated houses one block north and one block south of where the line was hit, but the residents were returned quickly.

"There were no gas readings in any structure," Bedell said.
