A new organization is looking for community assistance to support hundreds of police officers in York County.

#ThankBlueYorkPA was created by a small group of people throughout the county to show their appreciation for officers in light of police turmoil throughout the country.

“Many times we just don’t know how to be involved, and we thought this was a very comfortable way that we can lend a little support and show we care,” organization chair Frances Courtright said Saturday.

Project: For its first project, the group is putting together #ThankBlue We Care Bags to support the officers. They are collecting monetary donations as well as gifts of products or services through Nov. 15. Every bag will include a Fisher Police pen, a thank-you note, a mug or cup, and gift certificates for different services, such as dry cleaning or massages.

The pen is a special pen that will work in many situations, according to Courtright.

“It’s designed to write underwater, freezing conditions, hot conditions,” she said.

The goal is to distribute 700 bags in early December, with one bag for each officer in the county.

Future: Told of the new initiative, Southwestern Regional Police Chief Greg Bean said it's a good idea.

“I think goodwill from both sides is what we’re all striving for, and it’s nice to hear some of these initiatives,” the chief said.

Courtright said she hopes the organization can do more in the future.

"This is the first, and I think that the opportunity to do other things is wide open," she said.
