Severe thunderstorm warning in York County

Update: The severe thunderstorm warning has been extended until 5 p.m. Tuesday. The National Weather Service says the storm is producing wind gusts up to 60 mph.

Previous: Severe thunderstorms bringing heavy wind, rain and lightning will roll through York County this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS has a severe thunderstorm warning in effect for the area until 4 p.m.

The weather service says storms with wind gusts of up at 60 mph are on their way through Adams County and the northern half of York County, including York City.

The NWS advises people to move to interior rooms on the lowest floors of buildings.

"Torrential rain is expected," the weather service writes in the all-capital letters characteristic of its weather bulletins. The NWS also says a significant amount of cloud-to-ground lightning is expected, and lighting can occur as far as 10 miles out around a storm.

There's also a heat advisory in effect for the area until 7 p.m., as the heat index this afternoon is expected to peak around 100 degrees, and a severe thunderstorm watch until 11 p.m.

As always, the weather service advises people not to drive through flooded roads, and not to keep pets or children unattended in hot cars.
