A Heidelberg Township man killed during an early morning crash Saturday has been identified, according to a release from the York County Coroner's Office.

John Randolph Smith, 22, of 6010 Old Hanover Road, was driving his vehicle in the area of 857 Lake Road in Jackson Township about 3:45 a.m. when he hit a pole, causing the vehicle to flip over before coming to rest in a field, the coroner's office said.

A preliminary investigation by the Northern York County Regional Police Department determined Smith was traveling south on South Lake Road when he lost control of his 2000 Chevrolet Blazer. He then crossed into the opposing lane of traffic and struck a utility pole, according to a news release.

A passenger in the vehicle — a 21-year-old man from Spring Grove — was taken to York Hospital after the crash. His injuries were listed as "moderate," the release said.

The investigation determined neither Smith nor his passenger were wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. After the vehicle rolled over, Smith became entrapped.

Smith was pronounced dead at the crash scene, the coroner's office said. His cause of death was multiple blunt-force trauma, with the manner being accidental. No autopsy will be conducted.

The investigation is ongoing.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the Northern York County Regional Police Department at 717-292-3647 or use the crime tip reporting tool on the department's website at
