Police: 2 people detained in Columbia shootings; streets reopened

Columbia police have taken two people into custody in connection to an early Friday morning shooting that involved shots being fire at police.

At least one gunman opened fire on police in Columbia borough early this morning and eluded capture for several hours, and authorities had urged residents in part of the river town to stay in their homes.

Police are reopening streets and allowing residents to come out of their homes, Manheim Township police Lt. Tom Rudzinski, a member of the Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team, said earlier.

No one was injured.

Authorities had cautioned residents in parts of downtown Columbia to stay in their homes early Friday morning as dozens of police officers searched for the gunman.

Police initially responded to reports of shots fired in the 100 block of North Seventh Street just before 3:30 a.m. Authorities said a gunman had fired several shots at police.

No one has been reported injured, police said.

As many as 40 police officers and Lancaster County SERT officers were searching the area for a suspect.

Police had cautioned Columbia residents who live between Cherry and Chestnut streets and Sixth and Ninth streets to stay in their homes until the situation was resolved.

This area included the 600 to 900 blocks of Cherry, Blunston, Houston, Locust, Walnut and Chestnut streets and Ridge Avenue; and all of Bethel and Sixth, Seventh, Eighth and Ninth streets.

The supervisor did not know the motive behind the incident.
