Prison for York man who shot former roommate over $30 debt

A York City man has pleaded no contest to shooting his former roommate over a $30 debt.

Fahim Sanders, 31, formerly of South Hartman Street, entered his no-contest plea in York County Court Friday to attempted homicide and was sentenced to five to 10 years in state prison, according to court records, which state he will receive credit for time served.

Sanders has been in York County Prison since June 21, 2014, according to prison records.

As part of a plea agreement, his other charges were dismissed, including receiving stolen property, carrying a firearm without a license and reckless endangerment, court records state.

York City Police said Sanders shot former roommate Marciele Colon Haley just before 10 p.m. June 21, 2014, near the corner of West Market and South Penn streets.

Shot in back: Haley, now 37, survived a gunshot wound to his upper back, police said.

The shooting happened after the two men and another former roommate, Melissa Morehard, bumped into each other and Morehard reminded them of the outstanding $30 debt, court documents state.

Police said that's when Sanders pulled a stolen Keltec 9 mm handgun and fired.

Officers happened to be in the area and immediately arrested Sanders, police said.

They later determined the 9 mm handgun used by Sanders had been reported stolen to Southwestern Regional Police in 2013, according to documents.
