  • Spend time with kittens awaiting adoption on Saturday, July 23, at a "Kitten Pawty."
  • Animal Rescue Inc. is hosting the family-friendly event to find homes for its kittens and cats.
  • People who get pre-approved will likely be eligible for same-day adoption Saturday.

If you're searching for the purrfect companion or simply looking for something fun to do with the kids this weekend, Animal Rescue Inc. has you covered.

The Shrewsbury Township rescue is hosting a Kitten Pawty from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the MGM Dance Studio, 241 N. Main St. in Shrewsbury.

Meet Bunny Mama, one of nearly 200 cats and kittens waiting to be adopted from Animal Rescue Inc.

"It's more than just a fundraiser. It's an adoption event, because we have so many kittens in foster care right now," said Ashley Carlson, co-executive director of the rescue. "If people see them, they'll fall in love with them — and hopefully adopt them."

Carlson said it's the first time Animal Rescue Inc. is holding such an event.

"We have more kittens than we've ever had before, so we're trying something new to get them adopted," she said. "We'll have a couple of adult cats (on hand) and maybe a couple of seniors we want to spotlight."

The nonprofit organization is asking for a $5 donation at the door, or a case of wet cat food or a bag of dry cat food, Carlson said.

Kids' games: There will be face-painting for kids, as well as other children's games, plus a door prize will be given out, she said.

"And kids will probably enjoy playing with the kittens," Carlson predicted. "We're just hoping people come out and have fun."

Chili Pie is one of about 200 cats and kittens waiting to be adopted from Animal Rescue Inc.

People who think they might want to adopt a kitten or cat on Saturday can go to the rescue's website,, and fill out a cat-adoption application in advance. Website visitors also can see photos of cats and dogs available for adoption.

"If people can get pre-approved, we'll try to do a same-day adoption," Carlson said, adding that anyone who was approved as an adopter in the past two years also will be considered pre-approved for the event.

There are about 200 cats and kittens awaiting adoption, she said, many of which are in foster care.

Adoption fees: The cost to adopt a cat or kitten is $85 and includes spaying/neutering, microchipping and vaccinations, Carlson said.

The rescue has a "BFF program" for pairs of bonded cats and littermates, which is basically a two-for-one deal, she said.

There's also a "seniors for seniors" program in which adoption fees for older people adopting older dogs and cats are waived, according to Carlson.

Hundreds of cats and kittens are awaiting adoption from Animal Rescue Inc.

"We'd rather see animals in homes than here (at the rescue), so we're usually willing to work with people on our adoption fees, especially for our older (animals)," she said.

Animal Rescue Inc., located at 2 Heritage Farm Drive just north of the Mason-Dixon Line, does not euthanize dogs or cats for shelter space, although the rescue will do humane euthanization for sick or badly injured animals, Carlson confirmed.
