Thursday-night roadwork to snarl traffic in West York, Wrightsville

People driving on Route 30 near Wrightsville and on West Market Street in West York can expect to encounter traffic delays Thursday night, officials said.

Route 30's eastbound lanes between the Hallam and Wrightsville exits will close Thursday night for bridgework and won't reopen until Friday morning, according to PennDOT.

And West Market Street through West York Borough will also temporarily close so police can escort a wide load through the area, according to West York Police Chief Justin Seibel.

It's necessary to close both eastbound lanes of Route 30 so road crews can place a bridge beam on the Burgs Lane bridge that spans Route 30, according to the state Department of Transportation. The new beam replaces one damaged and removed last fall, according to PennDOT.

The eastbound lanes will be closed starting about midnight and reopen about 5 a.m. Friday, PennDOT said.

Eastbound traffic will be detoured onto Kreutz Creek Road, then onto Lincoln Highway (Route 462), then onto Ninth Street, then onto Cool Springs Road and back onto Route 30.

The Burgs Lane overpass was damaged in November when it was struck by a backhoe being hauled on a flatbed trailer, according to PennDOT. Kinsley Construction Inc. of York is handling the bridge repairs at a cost of $265,206, and should complete the work before the end of August, according to PennDOT.

Drivers can expect to encounter single-lane restrictions in the area between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. for the duration of the project.

Wide load in West York: Police are advising drivers to avoid the entire eight-block stretch of West Market Street in West York between 6 p.m. and about 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Police will be escorting a slow-moving wide load that makes it necessary to close West Market Street and its connecting side streets.

Side-street traffic won't be allowed to cross West Market Street until the load has made its way through the borough.

Drivers who choose not to avoid West Market Street should be prepared to "simply sit in traffic and wait," Seibel said.
