Lewisberry man dies in ATV crash in Bedford County
A 19-year-old Lewisberry man was killed Saturday when he crashed his ATV in Bedford County.
Brayden Bonsall was riding his ATV at Breezewood Proving Grounds Motorcross & ATV Park, near Bedford, when he crashed, according to Bedford County Coroner Rusty Styer.
Bonsall was wearing a helmet, the coroner said, but still suffered fatal injuries.
Trooper Jeff Petucci, a state police spokesman based in Blair and Bedford counties, said troopers were alerted to the crash about 7:20 a.m. Saturday.
According to Petucci, Bonsall was riding his Suzuki quad.
"He was on a jump and, as he was coming down off that jump, his ATV hit the ground, and he lost control, and he crashed," the trooper said.
Bonsall was rushed from the track to UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Styer.
Bonsall was not in a race at the time, Styer said; it appears he was simply riding for practice.
No autopsy is planned, said Styer, who has ruled the death an accident.
Loved riding: Bonsall, the son of Tiffany Baish-Grace of Carlisle and Lance Bonsall of Lewisberry, died "doing what he loved," according to his obituary.
He was a member of the American Motorcyclist Association and enjoyed riding ATVs, snowboarding and driving off-road in his Jeep, the obituary states.
A 2015 graduate of Red Land High School, Bonsall was working as an auto-body technician with Brown's Auto Body Werks in Mechanicsburg, according to his obituary.
Dan Harris, owner and president of Breezewood Proving Grounds, posted on the business' Facebook page that Bonsall was "wearing all the proper gear and a top-shelf helmet" when he crashed, and the ATV landed on top of him.
"Brayden has been riding quads at the Proving Grounds for as long as I can remember," Harris wrote. "Him and his father ride together and have a passion for this sport and the people in it."
