A small fire caused an evacuation at the work-release building near York County Prison in Springettsbury Township on Saturday afternoon.

According to Mary Sabol, the prison warden, the fire happened about 1:30 p.m. and was put out quickly. She said prison officials believe the fire was caused by smoking in the building, which is not permitted.

"Our preliminary thought is that's what occurred," she said.

According to York County 911 webcad, York Area United Fire and Rescue Battalion 89-1 responded. Sabol said the fire department and prison will be investigating the incident.

Concord Road was closed at Mount Zion Road for a short time.

There were no injuries, Sabol said.

"The inmates that were in that area were evacuated to the recreation area," she said.

Sabol said the fire was contained quickly and the damage was minimal.

"The inmates will be able to go back into that housing unit tonight," she said Saturday.

York Area United Fire and Rescue could not be reached for comment Saturday afternoon.
