Police: York City man endangered police
A York City man is being held in York County Prison on reckless endangerment charges after he allegedly placed several York City Drug Task Force and Northern York County Regional police officers' lives in danger during a March raid in Conewago Township.
Walter Tinsley, 44, of 1105 E. Philadelphia St., is charged with eight counts of reckless endangerment as well as a single count each of fleeing to elude arrest, driving on a suspended license and reckless driving. Tinsley was placed in York County Prison on Wednesday, May 25, after being arraigned on the charges earlier in the day. He is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
According to charging documents, task force officers were approaching a house in the 400 block of Lewisberry Road on March 17 to execute a search warrant and noticed a blue Dodge Durango parked in the driveway that had not been there 20 minutes earlier. As the officers rushed in, a man next to the Durango ignored their calls to stop as he jumped into the driver's seat and began backing out of the driveway.
Officers drew their guns and continued to shout commands to the driver to stop and to get out of the vehicle, but the driver did not stop. He ran over a bird bath and drove through an adjacent yard, making his way onto Lewisberry Road. An officer tried to give chase, but by the time he got back to his car and pulled out, the Durango was out of sight.
However, the officers had managed to get part of the license plate number and traced the registration of the vehicle back to a relative of Tinsley's.
Further investigation revealed Tinsley also lived at the residence where the vehicle was registered, and officers identified Tinsley as the driver of the Durango from his photo on file with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
Tinsley is scheduled for a preliminary hearing June 8.
The Northern York County Regional Police Department did not respond immediately to requests for comment.
