With Memorial Day coming up, Penn-Mar Human Services is hosting a roundtable discussion about veterans and suicide prevention on Friday.

The lunch, held as a part of the lunch and learn series hosted by the Southern Community Services and York County Suicide Prevention, is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 175 E. Main St. in New Freedom.

A man whose veteran son committed suicide in August will be sharing his story during the roundtable discussion.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 22 veterans commit suicide every day, averaging to one every 65 minutes. The number of suicides rose 11 percent from 2007 to 2010, according to the VA.

Cindy Richard, director of Southern Community Services, said the roundtable is open to everyone. Lunch is provided by Mission BBQ.

To reserve a spot at the lunch, call Richard at 717-227-0048.
