York County honors fallen at Memorial Day ceremonies
Throughout the day Monday, York County residents will come together to honor those U.S. servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of their nation.
Memorial Day parades are scheduled in West York and in Hanover, followed by a ceremony in York City later in the day. The York Revolution will also host a salute to veterans during its home game against the Somerset Patriots at PeoplesBank Park, 5 Brooks Robinson Way, at 5 p.m.
The West York parade is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. and will feature the First Capitol Color Guard. The Hanover parade, beginning at 8:30 a.m., will depart from the intersection of Carlisle and Chestnut streets and will make its way to Mount Olivet Cemetery at 725 Baltimore St. A service with the Allied Veterans Council will follow at 9 a.m.
At 11 a.m., the York County Department of Veterans Affairs and the York County Commissioners will host the city's annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Veteran's Memorial Park, 1000 Vander Ave. This year's keynote speaker will be retired-Australian Army Captain and Vietnam Veteran Colin Gibson.The ceremony will conclude with the playing of taps and a three-volley salute.
"We're going to have a guest speaker who served with a York County veteran who served in Vietnam," York County Department of Veterans Affairs Director Philip Palandro said.
Commissioner Christopher Reilly will offer additional comments as part of the ceremony, and citizens who wish to can sign up in advance for the opportunity to participate in a wreath laying.
"Anybody who would like to lay a wreath, they can do that. We just ask that they let us know so we can call on them by name," Palandro said.
