Clouds may have covered the sky, but Memorial Hospital officials were beaming as they broke ground on the new site of the facility on Loucks Road Tuesday.

Construction of the new 102-bed facility has started at the former Hawk Lake Golf Course in West Manchester Township. An American flag at the top of a hill marks the location of the actual facility.

"It certainly is an exciting day," said Sally J. Dixon, CEO of Memorial Hospital. "The same decisions we were making for this site were the same decisions they were making in 1960 for the (current) location."

Memorial bought the site near Loucks and Kenneth roads in 2008 and has been planning a new facility there since that time. The new hospital will be four levels, with all private rooms, the hospital said.

It will also include a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), something not offered at the current hospital.

Walking paths surrounding the area will still be there after construction is finished. The current trails are closed until construction at the site is finished, which is projected to be in late 2017, the hospital said in a news release.

The new facility will replace the current hospital in Spring Garden Township.

Site preparations began March 21 for a new roadway that will provide access to the property from both Loucks Road and Roosevelt Avenue. The new road will be named Old Memorial Way.
