Sign up for Senior Games in June

There's still plenty of time for seniors in York County to sign up for the 15th Annual Senior Games at the end of June.

The games span five days with 44 events, and more than 600 seniors will come together to compete, enjoy the outdoors and learn more about fitness and wellness from June 20 through June 24.

According to a new release from the York County Area Agency on Aging, competitors can take on each other in a triathlon, bocce, horseshoes, shuffleboard and Wii bowling, among other events.

Athletes can register for $12 before the end of May and $15 leading up to the games, according to the news release. The Agency on Aging encourages people to register early becasue of limited openings in some events. The registration is nonrefundable, and some events have additional fees that can be paid at the event.

Any York County resident 50 years or older as of Dec. 31, 2016, is eligible to participate. There are nine age groups split up by five years, from 50 through 90 years and older.

Opening and closing celebrations for the games are open and free to the public. The opening ceremony starts at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, June 21, on the front lawn near the main entrance to Central York High School, 601 Mundis Mill Road in Springettsbury Township. The ceremony will feature a color guard, parade of athletes and lighting of the torch.

Closing ceremonies will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, June 24, at the Central York High School cafeteria. Medal winners from the triathlon will be recognized at the event. Ice cream and music are available for participants and their families that day.

The Agency on Aging is also looking for volunteers to help during the games. All volunteers must be at least 14 years old. Email for more information.

Registration booklets are available throughout the county or can be obtained by contacting the York County Area Agency on Aging at 717-771-9001 or 1-800-632-9073. Registration booklets and forms are also available at on the Forms and Documents page.
